The Behavioral Health Administration and the University of Maryland Training Center will be offering an one day training: Providing Support to Families who have loss someone to Drug Overdose on May 30, at the Penn North Community Center.

In recent years, Maryland has experienced a major death increase due to drug over-dose. Since 2010 the numbers of drug overdose deaths in Maryland have double. Recovery Peer Specialists, on the front lines, are dealing with the realities of this grim statistic, providing support to families who have loss love ones due to drug overdose. This workshop on grief and loss is to assist the Recovery Peer Specialist to help families with their grief while the RPS maintain their own self- care and recovery practices. Six CEUs will be provided in the Recovery/ Wellness Domain.

Objectives of Training:

Grief and loss is something we all have experienced in our lifetime. The loss might be something minor such as not getting a job we wanted or a major devastation of losing a love one. How we respond to grief also varies from individual to individual. This workshop will explore:

  • Understanding grief as a healing and necessary process,
  • The stress of grief and how to cope,
  • How peer recovery specialists can provide support to individuals and/or their families experiencing the loss of a love one due to drug overdose. This will include listening and communication techniques to facilitate the bereaved in their healing.
  • Self- care techniques for the Recovery Peer Specialist to combat compassion fatigue and/or vicarious trauma .

Experiential adult learning techniques such as role plays, case- studies and group work will be utilized.
